When someone asks ChatGPT to recommend an accountant in Gatineau, the assistant names a few businesses. The businesses it names get the inquiry. The others may not even know the question was asked.<\/p>\n

This content explains how those answers are generated and what you can do to become part of them.<\/p>\n

How an AI assistant chooses its sources<\/h4>\n

AI assistants don\u2019t rank pages the way search engines do. They generate answers using sources they consider reliable, then cite the sources that informed those answers.<\/p>\n

Three factors carry significant weight.<\/p>\n

Clarity of the answer<\/h4>\n

A page that answers the question directly in the first sentence under a heading is much easier to cite than one that takes three paragraphs to get to the point. AI assistants extract passages. An extractable passage is short, complete, and able to stand on its own.<\/p>\n

Consistency of information<\/h4>\n

Your name, address, phone number, services, and business hours. When this information is consistent everywhere \u2014 your website, Google Business Profile, directories, and social media \u2014 it builds trust. When the information differs from one source to another, the assistant may favour a source that creates less uncertainty.<\/p>\n

Presence in third-party sources<\/h4>\n

AI assistants rely heavily on what other sources say about you. Articles, industry directories, local listings, and media mentions all contribute. Your own website makes the claim; other sources confirm it.<\/p>\n

What makes a page citable<\/h4>\n

A definition at the beginning.<\/strong> The first sentence under each section heading answers the question posed by that heading. Completely, without requiring the reader to look further down the page.<\/p>\n

Question-based headings.<\/strong> People ask AI assistants questions. A page structured around questions directly reflects the way those queries are phrased.<\/p>\n

Structured data.<\/strong> FAQPage, LocalBusiness, and Organization markup gives machines an unambiguous version of what the text already says.<\/p>\n

Visible dates.<\/strong> Include both the publication date and the last updated date. Recent information may be preferred over information whose current validity is difficult to determine.<\/p>\n

Both languages.<\/strong> In Quebec, the same question asked in French and English yields two answers built from different sources. A bilingual business that publishes in only one language may be missing from many of the conversations.<\/p>\n

A file few businesses have yet: llms.txt<\/h4>\n

Just as robots.txt tells search engines what they can crawl, llms.txt provides language models with a readable map of your website: who you are, what you offer, and where to find the most reliable information.<\/p>\n

The standard is still new, and adoption varies. It costs little to implement and presents your information as clearly as possible to the systems that read it.<\/p>\n

How to know whether AI is talking about you<\/h4>\n

This is a question most businesses still can\u2019t answer because their tools measure Google rankings and little else.<\/p>\n

What you measure here is different: the proportion of answers that mention your brand, the pages on your website that are cited, and where your business name appears among the companies mentioned in the same response.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s what we track for our clients, platform by platform, using a bilingual set of questions built around their market.<\/p>\n

Where to start<\/h4>\n
    \n
  1. Ask the questions yourself. <\/strong>Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini to recommend a business like yours in your city. Ask in both English and French. Take note of which businesses are mentioned.
    \n<\/strong><\/li>\n
  2. Check that your business information is consistent.<\/strong> Website, Google Business Profile, directories. Even small discrepancies can reduce confidence in the information.<\/li>\n
  3. Review your pages one by one.<\/strong> Does each section begin with an answer? Are your headings phrased as questions? Could an excerpt from the page stand on its own?<\/li>\n
  4. Publish in both languages.<\/strong> Don\u2019t treat one language as an after-the-fact translation. Build your presence in both search markets in parallel.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
